Bluetooth Grandma

By jeanwilde | March 2, 2007

I recently received a bluetooth for my cell phone and was immediately hooked. Now when I go anywhere in the car, I’m connected and can drive more safely. Recently on a trip to the Supermarket, I had left my bluetooth in my ear (sometimes I forget I have it on). A woman stopped me in the produce department and asked, “Is that some kind of hearing aid?” (obviously she is not up on the latest techies). I was kind of embarassed because I thought “do people think I’m trying to look important? I told the woman that I was on call and had to be available to any incoming calls. Ha Ha. little did she know that I’m only a grandma enjoying life and all that it has to offer including the newest gadget. My friend, Gail, is now a believer and we do breakfast together and are always available if anyone wants to reach us.
Move over Red Hat Ladies, here come the Bluetooth Grandmas.

techieGrandma welcomes you

By jeanwilde | March 2, 2007

My name is Jean and I’m 64 years old with some experience with computers as I worked for several years in an HR department. About a year ago, as my husband and I were setting out for a trip to California. I thought Wow I’ll be out of touch and so began the search for a laptop. We settled on an IBook Mac and have been very happy with the choice. Of course most of the campgrounds we stayed at had to have WI-FI or I’d search for a another one. Surprisingly, many of the campgrounds offered it and I’m sure this will become a given for many other campgrounds. It was so great because I could e-mail, pay my bills, and catch up on the local news in our hometown.

I recently had a problem with our router on our home Dell computer. Tried many different things and still no connection to my MAC. I tried the Linksys website and printed out 12 pages on what to do when you disconnect. I went through all the steps and still couldn’t resolve it. So what’s next? Call customer service at Linksys. I finally reached a rep (I’m sure he was in India, had quite an accent.) He talked me through several procedures and BAM we were up and running on the Dell. We set up a new password for the Mac and when I went to log on, just couldn’t succeed. I called him back and he gave me a great tip. For some reason, the macs sometimes won’t take the password without a dollar sign. I tried the new tip and VOILA immediately on line

If you’re having trouble logging on with a password to MAC, you might try putting a dollar sign in front of the password.

Hope to find out many little tidbits to help me learn more about this amazing world of communication.

Feel free to post any comments or suggestions you might have.

TechieGrandma’s blog begins!

By michaelwilde | February 28, 2007

My mom, Jean Wilde is the “techieGrandma”. She’s a normal average, well.. ok.. above average mom and grandma who just happens to be quite savvy with technology. Amongst all of the people I know her age, very few use computers, and most of them who do have trouble. Maybe the techieGrandma can help them out, and maybe even help everyone else too.

I’m her son Michael. I’m a Senior Sales Engineer for a cool company in San Francisco called “Splunk“. I may write from time to time–because sometimes me and mom figure things out together as she usually calls me before she has to sit on hold with someone in India.

Look for her story about Linksys tech support in India and her special secret tip for Mac Users who encounter Linksys wireless routers and have trouble connecting.
